What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture derives from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), a system that supports the notion that a type of life force, known as qi, flows through energy pathways (meridians) in your body. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), acupuncture has been in use in some form for at least 2,500 years.

Your acupuncturist inserts thin needles in your skin at points along meridians to achieve the proper flow of qi. Acupuncture stimulates nerves, muscles, and connective tissue.

What does the research say?

NCCIH reports that acupuncture may be helpful for back and neck pain, knee pain from osteoarthritis, migraine and tension headache frequency, fibromyalgia pain, seasonal allergy symptoms, and nausea and vomiting from cancer treatment, among other conditions. Research is ongoing, and results vary from person to person.

What can acupuncture help with?

Physical concerns

Acupuncture may help relieve headaches, lower back and neck pain, fibromyalgia pain, and knee pain from osteoarthritis.

Stress and well-being

Many patients use acupuncture for relaxation, stress relief, and better sleep. For anxiety or depression, acupuncture can be used alongside, not in place of, care from your doctor or mental health provider.

Women's health

Acupuncture may help ease premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms, and support menstrual cycle regularity, mood, and circulation.

Men's health

Men visit us for support with circulation, reproductive and sexual health, and prostate concerns, alongside care from their physician.

Facial rejuvenation

Facial rejuvenation is a non-invasive cosmetic treatment that uses thin needles at acupuncture points on the face. Sessions may support circulation and skin tone and soften the look of fine lines and puffiness. Learn about facial rejuvenation.

Fertility support

Some people use acupuncture for support and stress relief while trying to conceive, often alongside fertility treatment. We also see patients managing polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS, formerly known as PCOS) and endometriosis together with their medical care. Please keep your fertility doctor informed.

Children

We offer gentle, age-appropriate care for children, with a parent or guardian present, to support sleep, stress, and digestion. Please call to discuss your child's needs first.

What happens during an acupuncture appointment?

Sessions can take up to 60 minutes, although some appointments may be shorter.

For the treatment, you lie on a padded table, and your acupuncturist inserts needles at targeted spots across your body at various depths. You should experience little to no discomfort, and they may gently move the needles after placement.

The number of treatments you'd most benefit from depends on your condition and goals, but a plan of 6-8 sessions over several weeks is common.

Acupuncture works alongside, not in place of, care from your physician. Results vary from person to person.
