What is mental health?

Mental health involves your emotional and psychological well-being. Your mental state affects how you think, feel, behave, handle stress, relate to others, and make decisions.

If you experience a mental health issue, it may affect your thoughts, mood, and actions and lead to physical concerns such as headaches, digestive problems, and fatigue.

The Healing Point offers a holistic approach that looks at the whole person, and your practitioner can address several concerns in one visit.

What do patients see us for?

Acupuncture can complement therapy and medication. Patients come to us for support with:

  • Stress

  • Anxiety

  • Low mood and depression, alongside care from a mental health professional

  • Insomnia and other sleep difficulties

Many patients find acupuncture relaxing, and research into how it affects the nervous system is ongoing.

What are treatments for mental health?

The Healing Point may recommend a combination of treatments.

Acupuncture

In acupuncture, your practitioner inserts thin, sterile needles at acupuncture points along your body's meridians to help rebalance your energy flow (qi).

During a session, which can last up to 60 minutes, you lie comfortably on a padded table while your practitioner inserts needles into your skin. You may feel some pressure or an aching sensation, but you should experience little to no discomfort.

When performed by a qualified practitioner using sterile needles, acupuncture has a low risk of side effects. Common ones include bruising, minor bleeding, or soreness.

Acupuncture may be an option for people who want non-medication support, including during pregnancy. Talk with your doctor first, and do not stop or change any medication without your prescriber's guidance.

Supplements and herbal formulas

Your practitioner can educate you on supplements and herbal medicines that support stress management and overall well-being, including products from brands like Standard Process®, Metagenics, and Xymogen. Please tell your doctor about any supplements you take, as some interact with medications.

Acupuncture works alongside, not in place of, care from your physician or mental health provider. Results vary from person to person.
