What are GI conditions?

GI conditions affect your gastrointestinal (GI) tract. There are two types: functional and structural.

Functional conditions are the most common problems affecting the GI tract and involve its ability to keep moving (motility). These include constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), nausea, gas, bloating, and diarrhea.

Structural GI diseases include strictures, stenosis, hemorrhoids, colon polyps, cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease. These need diagnosis and care from your physician or gastroenterologist.

What digestive concerns do patients see us for?

Patients come to The Healing Point for supportive care with symptoms of:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

The Healing Point grounds treatments in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), a holistic medical system that's been practiced for thousands of years. Practitioners consider the mental and physical factors that may be contributing to your concerns.

What are treatments for GI conditions?

The Healing Point may recommend a combination of treatments.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture derives from TCM. It uses thin needles to help rebalance your body's natural energy, or qi, to support the functioning of your organs and tissues.

During an acupuncture session, which may last up to 60 minutes, your practitioner inserts thin needles into specific points on your skin. They may manually manipulate them or stimulate them with gentle electric pulses.

You should experience little to no discomfort, though you may feel a slight pressure or aching sensation when a needle reaches its targeted depth.

Researchers are studying how acupuncture may influence gut-brain communication, the connection between the nerves of your digestive tract and your brain, and how it may affect gut motility. NCCIH reports that acupuncture may help with nausea and vomiting from cancer treatment. Many patients also find sessions calming, which can help when stress affects digestion.

Supplements and herbal formulas

Your practitioner can educate you on supplements and herbal formulas that offer probiotic support for gastrointestinal and immune health, including products from brands like Standard Process®, Metagenics, and Xymogen. Please tell your doctor about any supplements you take.

Acupuncture works alongside, not in place of, care from your physician. See your doctor promptly for severe or persistent abdominal pain, blood in your stool, or unexplained weight loss.
