What the research says
NCCIH reports that acupuncture may help ease knee pain from osteoarthritis. NCCIH, Acupuncture: Effectiveness and Safety
A large meta-analysis of chronic pain trials, including osteoarthritis, found acupuncture more effective than sham and no-acupuncture controls. Vickers AJ, et al. Journal of Pain, 2018
Results are not uniform: one large trial in older adults found needle acupuncture no better than sham laser for chronic knee pain, so individual responses vary. Hinman RS, et al. JAMA, 2014
What to expect
Sessions can take up to 60 minutes. You rest on a padded table while thin needles are placed at targeted points. You should experience little to no discomfort. A plan of 6-8 sessions over several weeks is common, depending on your condition and goals.
Acupuncture works alongside, not in place of, care from your physician. Results vary from person to person.
